Why counseling is important?

This is a question that might come to mind if the topic of someone going to counseling entered a conversation.

So, why is it important?

To answer this question, I did some research on the internet. Here’s one answer that I found from Wiki answers. The answer: to let people vent.

Wow, that is deep. Ok, not that deep.

There is some truth to that answer, but I think there is more to it than just that. Yes, going to a counselor gives us the ability to vent, to release. Here are a few more other factors that make counseling important and sometimes essential.

The Bible says it’s important and needed. In the book of Psalm, David time and again points out the importance of God’s counsel and that man also seeks the counsel of others.

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked …” Ps.1:1
In not seeking the counsel of the wicked, God says that the counsel of the wise is also a blessing.

Proverbs notes the importance of taking heed of the counsel the writer is giving to his audience.

“I have counsel and sound wisdom…” Prov. 8:14
“Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” Prov. 15:22

The other thing that can show us the importance of counsel is life itself. The world we live in is not static, but ever-changing and moving. We are ever-changing and moving. The transitions of life are vast and not always easy to handle. Have you ever experience a transitioning event that almost knocked you on your back? I have and have seen others going through these, almost too hard to swallow, events.

With these two factors in mind, seeking counsel is sometime the most important thing one can do. Someone that is not involved in the situation at hand can provide the key perspective that will help in pulling through with little or no harm. When it’s the counsel of one who seeks the counsel of God, we can even grow stronger from it.

Transitions are inevitably, but we don’t have to face them alone!
