Men, lead well.

On Wednesday mornings I meet with a group of 6 guys for manUP. ManUP is designed for men to be challenged through an intense study of God’s Word to be transformed for Gospel-centered leadership and living.

We are currently studying 1 Timothy and looking at how, as men, we are called to step up and lead. We came across one of the most controversial passages in our day 1 Timothy 2:11 “Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness.”

Its a verse/topic that many interpret a variety of wrong ways. Its a quick judgement to read into it chauvinism (misundertand the verse) or feminism (ignore the verse). Few see the depth and beauty of this Gospel-centered and biblical teaching. We often choose to see what women are not “allowed” to do rather than what the man is called to do. The word ‘submissive’ carries the idea of a military officer. It is not declaring ability or superiority but purpose and order. Paul is telling Timothy that God designed a purpose and order for the man/woman relationship, he is not making calls about ability.

Men, a simple question: ‘Are you a man that a woman would want to submit to?’

This puts the emphasis back on the man. When men have character, integrity, love Jesus, and are led by the Holy Spirit; this verse is understood as beautiful not chauvinistic or feministic.

Men, lead well.
